Petans cares for the environment.

We are proud to make the site as environmentally friendly as possible, it also helps us save energy and keep our running costs as low as possible. We have worked hard to ensure that we investigate and invest in leading energy saving technology. As a result we have used a number of different technologies to generate, harvest and conserve energy on the site.

Petans has achieved the environmental management standard and ISO 18001 Health and Safety management standard. We are pleased to be used as a reference site in East Anglia for commercial organisations wishing to see different energy saving and recycling technologies being used in combination. Below are just some of the latest examples of the technologies used on our site.

Energy saving technologies

  • Solar thermal water heating for the main survival tank (the UK's largest evacuated tube system)
  • Solar thermal heating of water feeding the site showers and background heating to classrooms
  • Air Source Heat pump back up to Solar Panels
  • 4000 Litre Oscar: a thermal (heat) store with heat exchanger distribution fed from solar panels and Air Source heat pump
  • Refurbishment programme means that despite being 'temporary' all classrooms are less than three years old and built to the best insulation standards available
  • Photovoltaic panels to provide solar derived power to offices and computers in Administration unit
  • Wind powered lighting in the car park
  • Site lighting is low energy consumption with timers and light sensors on all exterior lighting to prevent waste
  • Classroom lighting is motion sensor operated

Recycling and environmental impact activity

  • Biodisc system takes and treats all grey water from pool and showers naturally
  • All fireground and helideck water captured and kerosene skimmed off for reuse. After this skimming, and settling out solids, all water goes through a bio remediation system to clean it ready for storage and then it is reused on the firegrounds
  • Fire tray baffles used on props to reduce fuel temperatures and the area of burn, and so reduce visible smoke emissions

All of these measures go towards making this a better, more environmentally friendly site.
