Requirements to travel offshore by Helicopter
As of the 1st Sept 2014:
- CA-EBS training is required to sit in the middle of the helicopter.
- Existing LAPPS EBS training is valid for travel on helicopters only when seated by windows or exits
As of 1st Jan 2015:
- CA-EBS training is required for all helicopter travel
Helicopter companies and operators will not mix CA-EBS and existing LAPPS EBS on flights, logistically this will be too difficult. This means that, operationally, you may not be able to fly without CA-EBS training after the 1st Sept 2014.
The planned roll-out of the CA-EBS is due to take place on 25th August 2014. PLB’s from existing LAPPS EBS jackets will be swapped into the new CA-EBS jackets. It is expected that the helicopter operators will mostly fly with CA-EBS, but a small number of LAPPS jackets may remain until late 2014.
Implications for BOSIET/MIST and FOET
As of 1st Sept 2014 the BOSIET/MIST or FOET by themselves will no longer be sufficient for helicopter travel offshore, additional CA-EBS training will also be needed.
Petans will be scheduling CA-EBS courses in the evenings after BOSIET and FOET courses to enable delegates to complete all necessary training in 1 visit.
The BOSIET and FOET standards are scheduled for review by OPITO in Q3 of 2014. It is expected that that the new BOSIET and FOET (including CA-EBS) will be in place for January 2015.
